A deacon in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is a rostered minister of Word and Service, called to connect the church’s ministry with the needs of the world. Deacons proclaim the Gospel through teaching, advocacy, and service, equipping others for lives of faithful witness and action. They lead and support ministries of compassion, justice, and care within both the congregation and the broader community. Deacons encourage and empower members to serve their neighbors, addressing social concerns and promoting well-being. Through their ministry, ELCA deacons embody Christ’s love by bridging faith and daily life in service to others.

A pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is a rostered minister of Word and Sacrament, called to lead worship, preach, and teach the Gospel. Pastors administer the sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion, nurturing faith and spiritual growth within the congregation. They provide pastoral care, offering support and guidance in times of joy, sorrow, and need. Pastors also engage in outreach, fostering relationships within the wider community and working for justice and reconciliation. Above all, ELCA pastors seek to embody Christ’s love, welcoming all people and guiding them in their faith journey.
